Intro to Domaine Villargeau Coteaux du Giennois – Domaine Villargeau Coteaux du Giennois has delicious refreshing appley dry fruit characters. Full tasting note and wine making – Fruity nose with a minerally, tangy flavour with fresh acidity and a guava and zesty lime finish. The small appellation of Côteaux du Giennois has only 91 hectares planted with Sauvignon vines, and as it lives in the shadow of its neighbour, the renowned Pouilly-Fumé, its wines often slip under the radar and are hence excellent value. The classic gooseberry fruit on the nose is intense yet restrained, and leads into a palate bursting with flavours of lime and nettle, delivered with a clean and crisp feel. The producer – Domaine Villargeau is the benchmark producer of the Coteaux du Giennois. They have been leading the way within their region for just over 20 years. They produce Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and over 85% of their production currently being exported to over 10 countries. The region is found just to the north of both Sancerre and Pouilly Fume and is fast becoming a perferred wine to these two other more well known communes. If you have yet to try wines from the Giennois then you have not tried some of the best wines from the Central Loire Valley. Marc’s grandfather bought the farm that is now Villargeau from Chateau de Tracy in 1920, and grew cattle and cereal. In 1991 his father and uncle decided to diversify and planted vineyards on abandoned hillsides that previously had vines before phylloxera hit in the late 19th century.
